The psalms, often referred to as Tehillim (“Songs of Praise”), comprise the core of the prayer book of the Orthodox Church. They are the principal readings of the morning and evening services of the Hours, of the Divine Liturgy, and of other liturgical ceremonies such as funerals. They are also read at private devotions. Fragments and individual verses of the psalms are also used as Prokimena (introductions to scriptural readings) and Stichera.

A great majority of the psalms were written by King David. They include psalms of alabanza and adoración as well as judicial appeals to the heavenly court. Prophetic pictures of the Messiah are reflected in many of them.

The titles of most psalms contain the word mizmor (mzmvr; Greek: , psalmos), which denotes a song accompanied by a musical instrument. This description is the basis for the collective title Psalmoi found in most manuscripts and from which the English term Psalter derives. Thirteen psalms have the Hebrew description shir (SHyr; Greek: ode), which signifies the flow of speech in a regular strain.
